How to maintain and clean an LED video wall
Keep modules, fans, and firmware in a boring routine so the wall stays even, cool, and serviceable years after install.
LED walls do not stay new. Dust, haze, pollen, fingerprints, UV, and heat slowly steal contrast and create the “random dead module” call. Maintenance is a calendar, not a crisis response. This tutorial covers cleaning that does not void common sense, spare-parts discipline, firmware windows, and inspection intervals for house and rental walls.
Nothing here replaces a manufacturer’s chemical restrictions. If the manual bans solvents, believe it.
What you are protecting
- Optical: dust on the face lowers contrast and can look like dead pixels on camera.
- Thermal: clogged fans and filters raise PSU and receiving-card temperature. Heat looks like flicker and short life.
- Mechanical: missing locks, tired magnets, and bent hanging ears are safety issues (see the rigging tutorial).
- Software: mixed firmware and lost cabinet files turn a five-minute swap into a rebuild.
A wall that is cleaned and logged lasts longer than a wall that is only “fixed” when it fails on Sunday.
Cleaning the face without destroying it
Power down and let cabinets cool. Gloves help you avoid new fingerprints.
Dry first. Use a soft anti-static brush or low-pressure air from a clean source. Do not use a shop compressor that spits oil and water. Do not shove a vacuum nozzle into modules; it can pull coatings and LEDs.
Then, if needed, a slightly damp wipe. Distilled water on a lint-free microfiber is the default. Wring the cloth until it is barely damp. Wipe with the module, not in grinding circles that drag grit across diodes.
Avoid:
- Paper towels (scratch, leave lint)
- Window ammonia, acetone, alcohol blends the vendor did not approve
- Pressure washers (even outdoors — water in connectors)
- Sticky rollers that yank GOB or lenses
- Fingers “just for that one spot”
Haze and fog juice leave a film. If the worship set uses atmosphere every week, clean more often and keep haze machines from blasting the wall directly.
For GOB/COB protected faces, still use vendor-approved methods. A hard coat is not a cutting board.
Outdoor walls collect pollen and pollution. Schedule cleaning after high-pollen months. Confirm IP-rated covers are actually closed when you are done.
Rear service: dust, fans, and connectors
If you can reach the rear:
- Vacuum or brush PSU intakes and fan guards.
- Confirm fans spin. A silent PSU in a hot cabinet is a future black rectangle.
- Inspect power and data connectors for burn, green corrosion, or loose strain relief.
- Check that cabinet doors latch. An open door is a handhold for the next volunteer.
Do not blow compressed air into a PSU from the exhaust side as your only move; you may pack dust deeper. Follow the airflow arrows.
Indoor installs against a wall need a vacuum schedule even more: they become silent filters for the room.
Spares, batches, and the spare-module fridge
Keep:
- Modules from the same product and batch when possible
- At least one receiving card loaded with the house cabinet file
- Power/data jumpers
- A copy of the processor project, cabinet files, and a photo of the map
Store modules in anti-static bags, not in a cardboard pile under the baptistry. Label them with pitch, scan, and date received. A “P2.6 spare” of unknown scan is how you create a bright island.
After you swap a module, add the failed one to a repair bin with a note (cabinet ID, symptom). Send batches for repair instead of collecting mysteries.
When you buy more modules years later, budget time to calibrate. New modules will not match aged ones out of the bag.
Firmware and file hygiene
- Update firmware in a planned window, on a spare, then on one column, then the wall.
- Never mix “whatever the laptop had” with a live show wall.
- Keep a read-only archive:
cabinet-file,map,processor-project,brightness-presets. - When a vendor tech visits, get a copy of anything they change before they leave.
Version names beat “final_final2.”
Inspection calendar
Weekly (house wall, in use):
- Walk-on test pattern or a known slide from row two
- Note new dark modules
- Confirm processor presets were not “improved” by a guest
Monthly:
- Face dust check; clean if IMAG shows haze
- Rear filter / fan check if accessible
- Verify spare modules still boot in a test cabinet or a known slot
Quarterly or per-tour cycle:
- Lock and frame inspection (rigging tutorial)
- Last-cabinet voltage under a white pattern
- Backup export of all show files
- Review the fault log for repeat cabinets
Annually:
- Full brightness/color recall against a meter or camera
- Structural hardware inspection by someone qualified if the wall flies
- Replace tired fans before summer
Rental walls get a shop check every cycle: every lock, every jumper, a full map read-back, and a clean face if they came back sticky.
Environment
- Keep ambient within the cabinet rating. A wall in an unconditioned lobby in August will fail like outdoor product.
- Direct sun on an indoor wall fades and overheats. Treat windows as a design problem.
- Condensation: do not power a wall that sat in a cold truck and then entered a humid hall until it is dry.
- Pests. Churches find interesting things in warm PSUs. Screens on vents help.
Common mistakes
Cleaning with the wall at full white. You will not see the dirt, and you may smear it.
Spraying liquid onto the face. Spray the cloth, not the diodes.
No fault log. You will replace the same column’s jumper four times and call it bad product.
Storing flight cases in a leaky closet. The cases are not dry just because they have foam.
Letting haze coat the wall all fall and scheduling cleaning for “someday.” Contrast is already gone.
Skipping the boring monthly walk until the Christmas scenic looks patchy on camera.
A one-page house SOP
Tape this inside the rack:
- Weekly: look at the wall with a grid. Log faults.
- After heavy haze: dry clean at the next dark time.
- Module swap: power policy per manual, spare from the labeled bin, update the log.
- Never update firmware on Saturday.
- Never use household glass cleaner.
- If it flies or stacks tall, locks are a safety check, not a picture check.
